You play as a survivor of the terraforming space-ship, “Aurora”, which has crashed into the ocean of an alien planet. The game, as the name implies, take part mostly under water, diving amongst corals, fungi, fish, and vines, and the game uses this to present a unique set of challenges you have to deal with managing air, not swimming too deep, and having to unlock technology to dive deeper and into caves and wrecks. Let’s start with the first thing you notice: The graphics! Subnautica is a very pretty, stylized game, from the white sci-fi plastic surfaces to swimming in the dark above a seafloor of bioluminescent plants, you invariably end up spending the first minutes looking at everything until that “10 seconds of air” warning …
